[Akihabara] Chiyoda City Installs 10 Smart Trash Bins Along Chuo-dori and Around Akihabara Station from Early November

Image: 東京新聞 記事

Overview

Chiyoda City is installing smart trash bins along Akihabara Chuo-dori and around Akihabara Station as a countermeasure against littering in the Akihabara area. According to the city, operation is scheduled to begin in early November 2026.

The Tokyo Shimbun reports that the bins mainly target littering by foreign tourists and that an installation commemoration event will be held on November 8.

Features

  • Solar power: a solar panel on top of the bin generates electricity
  • Automatic compaction: trash is compacted automatically, so each bin holds more than a conventional one (excluding PET bottle, can and bottle bins)
  • Cloud monitoring: fill levels are monitored and analyzed in real time for efficient collection
