Overview
A large-scale building replacement and demolition project has begun in Taito 1-chome, Taito-ku, the founding location of TOPPAN Holdings. The targeted buildings, located about an 8-minute walk northeast of Akihabara Station, are believed to be part of the "Akihabara Reconstruction" initiative outlined in the company's mid-term management plan adopted in 2023.
Highlights
The demolition covers 10 buildings: Sales Buildings No. 1 through 3, the West Building, the East Building, the Studio Building, the former Pension Hall, the former Union Building, and two garbage sheds, totaling 32,013.78 sqm of floor space. The centerpiece is the former headquarters "Toppan Building," completed in 1968 on the site of the old Shimoya factory, which served as a core TOPPAN Group facility since Japan's postwar high-growth era.
- Construction is handled by Kajima Corporation; demolition began May 1, 2026
- Completion is targeted for September 30, 2029
- Part of a reorganization plan to consolidate the company's scattered Tokyo facilities
- Plans for the site's future use and any new facility have not been announced as of June 2026
